The Black Phone
The director's contained scarefest stands strong despite the lack of a sequel. Set in 1978 Denver, a series of disappearances has left the local kids on edge. Once Finney is kidnapped by the kidnapper and locked up in a basement, he dreads a fatal end. Yet the non-functional line on the wall repeatedly calls, with eerie communicators giving advice, and the prescient dreams of Gwen, his sister could save him. A solid creepfest. This Dramatic Portrait
In the battle between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for materialism in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish film adaptation regarding the shamed televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor portrays the venal Jim, who declares at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. The couple set about capitalizing on the people's spiritual convictions. It's an extravaganza of poor styling, bad makeup and hypocrisy, yet the lead actress manages to show the character in a likable light. October 14th, late night, Film4
